The first hours of a water loss decide how much of the job is drying and how much is demolition. Water that is extracted while it is still standing is water that never gets the chance to wick into drywall, soak a subfloor, or reach an adjoining room.

Why speed changes the outcome

Porous building materials absorb at very different rates. Carpet and pad take on water almost immediately. Drywall wicks upward from the bottom edge. Subfloor and framing take longer but also release it far more slowly, which is why a loss caught late turns into a week of drying instead of two days.

There is also a category problem. Clean water that sits, warms, and contacts soil or organic material does not stay clean water, and once it has degraded the materials it touched are no longer candidates for drying in place.

How extraction is done

Standing water is removed with truck-mount or portable extraction units before any drying equipment is set. On carpet, weighted extraction tools are used to compress the pad and pull water that a wet vacuum will not reach — a step that is often the difference between saving a pad and hauling it out.

Hard surfaces are squeegeed and extracted, then checked with meters, because tile and vinyl hide water underneath rather than showing it. Where water has gone under a floating floor or behind a wall, small controlled access points are made so the cavity can be extracted and dried rather than sealed up wet.

Eden Prairie lower levels

A large share of the emergency extraction work in Eden Prairie happens in finished lower levels — walkouts and lookouts built into a grade, with bedrooms, family rooms and carpet below the surrounding soil line. These spaces collect water from failed sump pumps, saturated ground after a thaw, and supply lines running through exterior walls. Because they are finished, the material at risk is expensive, and because they are below grade, the water has nowhere to drain on its own.

Before the crew arrives

  1. Stop the source if it is plumbing and the shutoff is reachable.
  2. Do not walk through standing water near outlets or a panel.
  3. Get contents up off the floor — especially paper, electronics and upholstered furniture.
  4. Remove area rugs from wet hardwood; the dye will transfer.
  5. Photograph the water at its height before anything is extracted.

Once water is out, the job moves to structural drying. Extraction without a measured drying plan leaves moisture in the assembly and invites a mold problem a few weeks later.
