A sewage backup is not a water damage job with a worse smell. It is a biohazard, and it is handled under different rules from start to finish.
Why it is treated differently
Sewage is Category 3 water — grossly contaminated, carrying bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. The health risk comes from direct contact, from contaminated material being tracked into clean areas, and from aerosolised contamination when the area is disturbed. This is why the work is done under containment by people in appropriate protective equipment, not with a shop vacuum and a mop.
The practical consequence for a property owner is that far more material is removed than in a clean-water loss. Porous materials that sewage has contacted — carpet and pad, drywall, insulation, particleboard, upholstered furniture, mattresses — are not disinfected and dried. They come out.
